NANJING: Jyothi Surekha Vennam became the first Indian woman compound archer to win a medal at the Archery World Cup Final, clinching the bronze with a perfect performance on Saturday.
The reigning Asian Games champion shot 15 consecutive 10s to defeat world No. 2 Ella Gibson of Great Britain 150–145 in the bronze medal match, marking her maiden podium finish at the season-ending event.
The 29-year-old began strongly in the quarterfinals, beating Alexis Ruiz of the USA 143–140, before falling narrowly to world No. 1 Andrea Becerra of Mexico 143–145 in the semifinals. Jyothi led by one point after three ends, but Becerra finished stronger to advance to the final.
A silver medallist at the 2021 World Championships, Jyothi delivered a flawless display in the bronze medal match to end her campaign on a high. This was her third appearance at the World Cup Final, after early exits in Tlaxcala (2022) and Hermosillo (2023).
India’s other women’s compound archer, Madhura Dhamangaonkar, lost 142–145 to Mexico’s Mariana Bernal in the opening round.
In the men’s compound section, Rishabh Yadav missed a bronze medal by millimetres, losing to former world champion Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands in a shoot-off after both were tied 147–all.
Abhishek Verma remains India’s only medallist in the World Cup Finals’ history, having won silver in 2015 (Mexico City) and bronze in 2018 (Samsun). No Indian qualified in the recurve category this season.
