After facing heat over Ayudha Puja in Karur aftermath, TVK asks cadre to refrain from Diwali fest
In an official circular, TVK general secretary N Anand urged all district secretaries and state-level office-bearers to observe the festival with restraint
CHENNAI: In the backdrop of controversy over Ayudha Puja performed on party president Vijay’s campaign vehicle, immediately after the Karur tragedy, The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Saturday directed its cadre to refrain from celebrating Deepavali this year, as a mark of respect to the 41 people who lost their lives in the tragic stampede during the party's public rally on September 27. The decision was made as per the instructions of TVK president and actor Vijay.
In an official circular, TVK general secretary N Anand urged all district secretaries and state-level office-bearers to observe the festival with restraint. "Following the guidance of our leader, we request all cadre not to celebrate Deepavali this year, in memory of those who lost their lives in the Karur tragedy," the statement said.
The move comes in the wake of sharp criticism directed at the party after photographs emerged showing the party conducting Ayudha Puja to Vijay’s campaign vehicle, apart from various TVK functionaries indulging in such puja, shortly after the fatal incident. Party insiders said the latest directive aims to convey the organisation's empathy and solidarity with the bereaved families.
