Sri Lankan pirates attack, rob TN fishermen near Vedaranyam coast
The incident occurred when three fishermen from Nagapattinam, Rajkumar, Rajendran, and Nagalingam were fishing in their fibre boats near Vedaranyam on Saturday afternoon.
CHENNAI: In a mid-sea attack, alleged Sri Lankan pirates reportedly targeted fishermen from Tamil Nadu and snatched away their catch and their fishing gears off Vedaranyam coast late on Friday. The injured fishermen reached the shores on Saturday, and three of them have been admitted to the government hospital.
Taking advantage of favourable weather conditions, fishermen from the Nagapattinam district have been venturing into the sea from Kodiyakarai.
On Friday, six fishermen from Akkaraipettai and Perumalpettai ventured into the sea in two country boats. They were fishing south east off Kodiyakarai coast, when a gang of six persons, suspected to be from Sri Lanka, approached them in two FRP boats and attacked them; they snatched catch weighing around 100 kg and made away with their nets, GPS, mobile phones and other tools.
A few other fishermen helped them get back to the shore, soon after which they informed the Coastal Security Group personnel and the Marine police who registered a case.
The three fishermen admitted to hospital have been identified as S Kumar (48), K Jagan (30) and N Lakshmanan (40) from Perumalpettai.
