Q: I will be graduating in computer science and would like to pursue a career in creating video games. But my parents discourage me saying that it is a job for boys. They don’t give many reasons except that it requires unscheduled work hours that may not suit a family life. Is there any way I could pursue my passion? (Sushma Prashanth)

I do understand the concern of your parents and this job demands long and irregular working hours. But if it is your passion and you enjoy creating video games, it is one of the top home jobs that one could aspire. It requires only a casual working environment. Many companies prefer it to be that way for a couple of reasons. There are a number of technical jobs available in the video game industry and one need to develop specific skills for them. I shall list them here.

Game designers — They are the concept and content creators and eventually those ideas become games. It starts with an idea, developing into characters and story and finally to production. Game designers team up with the entire crew to complete a game. One has to possess good communication skills and ability to write down the ideas clearly. He or she should also possess knowledge of all departments.

Computer programmers – They are the software developers or those who do coding. They are responsible for the final version of the video game. One has to have an excellent knowledge of mathematics and computer skills. Courses in trigonometry, geometry along with Java, C and C++ languages are compulsory skills.

2D, 3D animators – These are the ones who present the video visually. They are the artists who virtually move the individual pictures. The related degrees or diploma are important.

Sound engineers – Soundtracks and re-recording are done by the sound engineers (also known as audio engineers).

Writers – are the scriptwriters who give life to the characters through dialogue.

Subtitle writers – it is also a specialised job and they are the ones who come up with subtitles in many languages and translate the final product in other languages.

Testers – they test the quality of the product and provide assurance. They ensure that the game functions across all platforms without any hitch and has the desired result. They are also capable of identifying bugs and give feedback to various departments. There are no major formal requirements. A tester is like a proof reader, who should be able to spot the mistakes. His/her skills in all the departments will help to identify mistakes.

Marketing managers and retailers – The former come up with strategies to sell the product and the latter actually sell them.

Customer care support – they are specialised in offering technical support to assist the customers.

If you analyse the skills and requirements, you can understand that it does not demand any formal setup. The skills and meeting deadlines are the primary requirements and allow you to follow your passion working from wherever you are.

There are formal schools to become video game designers. The classes are offered in the classroom and virtually. The scale of your salary rises with years of experience and the quality of the product that you are capable of producing. There are many online and classroom centres. You can find them by surfing the web and get into graduate degrees, professional certificate and diploma courses.

The companies and producers look for talents all around, no matter from where you work.
