Slice of Life: ‘Give a little of love and affection, get back a lot’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle

Chennai
I never planned to be associated with special children. It was providential that I entered this field. I had joined a teacher’s training course in Mithra. I was in half a mind to give it up, as it was meant for special children.
As a child, I was pampered with all that I wanted by my parents, because I was physically challenged. I was not an outgoing or affectionate person. But during my study at Mithra, I came under the guidance of Selvyn Roy, a clinical psychologist, who taught me.
Later, when I moved to Premavasam, a home for children with mental and physical disabilities, I was again flooded with doubts about my ability to work with the children.
Soon, Roy sir guided me and counselled me to continue and here I am with Premavasam for the past 19 years, as a coordinator. I have a son, who is going to complete schooling in a couple of years. I stay at the home, right next to the room for special children.
My life revolves around them entirely. Even when I visit my parents or sisters, I am back here to continue my service. I have realised that if you give even five per cent of your love and affection you get a lot more of it.
