Reporter's Diary: When rain gods rain over official RMC predictions

With the recent spell of rain in the city, the scale has once again tipped in the favour of weather bloggers and not the Regional Meterological Centre. When Chennai recorded moderate to heavy rainfall last week, this scribe, who would usually contact both bloggers and weathermen about rain forecast received divided opinions.

While the weathermen at RMC denied any rain in city, bloggers were certain of heavy rainfall in the afternoon. It did rain in the afternoon. Sensing this, the RMC conducted a hurriedly-arranged press conference the next day and said, “Northern parts including Chennai will receive moderate to heavy rain in Chennai for two days.”

The rain gods, however, eluded the city but lashed Southern and Western parts of the state. Since then, the RMC has been issuing bulletins containing forecasts like moderate rain and partly cloudy sky. When this reporter again contacted a weatherman about different opinions between them and weather-blogger, he smiled and said, “We are updating what our satellite images show and that is it.”

He did not want to comment on the accuracy of the predictions made by private weather forecast companies and bloggers. With private weathermen proving to be more accurate, one wonders if people follow the official weatherman anymore.

Incidentally, how does one blame the RMC when their satellites (government-owned) aren’t as effective and accurate as those owned by others.
