Slice of Life: ‘Making coir pots is not just business, it is my passion’
Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle

Chennai
Sumathi Rangarajan (47), Businesswoman
I have always been fascinated by plants and I love being close to nature. Both these passions came together through the coir pots that can be used for growing plants. These pots not only support plants, but also save water.
You just have to spray water on them and the anti-bacterial properties of the coir keep insects at bay. I have been advocating its use by talking to neighbours who are interested in gardening. These can also be put to decorative purposes, while the pots come in various sizes – starting from six inches. The price range is between Rs 60 and Rs 300.
A lot of people reach out to me, as they hear about my initiative from others who have purchased these pots from me. It is a passion more than business and I am glad I have been able to change people’s attitude towards nature in a small way. I have been able to focus on this passion since I shifted to Chennai.
I was a school teacher in Pollachi and have taught my students back there to come up with similar pots. Now, I am able to involve in it full time, as my children have grown up, unlike earlier when I had a lot of family commitments.
