Model Citizen: Techie works hard to save greenery, maintain cleanliness
I (Koil Raj) have always had a passion for cleanliness and greenery. I work full time at an MNC and try to make time for these activities, as these two topics are close to my heart. Around eight years ago, I brought together my neighbours - say 53 families – by organising cleanliness drives and cultural activities.

Chennai
Soon, we formed the Ranga Road Residents Association and the cleanliness drive was extended to other parts of the road. After stumbling on source segregation, I spread the word among neighbours, along with an office bearer of the association.
We went from door-to-door to educate the residents on the importance of it and outsourced the collection of the dry waste to an agency. Learning about my activities in the area, the office-bearers of the Mylapore Residents Welfare Association, whose members are extensively involved in community activities, enrolled me as a member.
The activities in my neighbourhood were then handed over to the women and an all-women committee of office bearers. In the Mylapore association, I am a part of Kapaleecharam, which focuses on cleanliness and crowd management during temple festivals at the Kapaleeswrar Temple.
Concentrating on activities related to solid waste management, I take part in source segregation and cleaning drives.
As a member of the St Luke’s Church in Mandaveli, where the priest is keen on spreading green cover, I am part of their increasing activities in Mylapore, Tiruninravur and Nochi Kuppam. It is a small and significant contribution and through which I want to serve the society.
