More trouble mounts for SVS Medical College of Yoga and Naturopathy, which was closed following the alleged suicide of three girls reportedly owing to harassment by the management. The Madras High Court has directed the State to look into the representation of a PIL seeking constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to go into the issue of illegal recognition and affiliation granted to the college.
The plea had also sought to take action against those involved in allowing the college to function despite lack of recognition. First bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MM Sundaresh, held that the plea against illegal recognition had been made only on January 28, 2016. Moreover, the documents submitted contain no such material which could give any input to the court. “Since the representation is recent in character, it could not be accepted that the Government would be able to respond within three or four days.
However, this does not take away the obligation of the authorities concerned to look into the issue, which in turn has already persuaded the State to transfer the students to other institutions”, the bench said and disposed the case.
Advocates’ Forum for Social Justice who had move the PIL contended that despite the Inspection Committee sending a report to the Government about lack of infrastructure in the college, officials from the Health and Family Welfare Department and Dr, MGR Medical University had granted approval and affiliation.
