Giving short films an international platform
Srinivasa Santhanam, Festival director of the Chennai International Short Film Festival, that will be held from February 15 to 21, talks about the third edition of the gala event

Chennai
How is this year’s film festival different from the earlier editions?
Last year we received around 900 entries from 55 countries and this year we received nearly 3,200 entries even three weeks before the closing date. The festival administration had to close the entries well before the deadline which was 15 December 2015, as the selection process became tough for the organisers. We received entries from more than 90 countries.
What is the theme under which films will be made this year?
There is no specific theme that has been earmarked for this edition. However, we always believe in “the whole world is one” theme, because the festival brings together communities from various ethnicities under one umbrella.
How has the short film industry changed over the years?
The short film industry has yet to take off. There is no active movement as such happening. Chennai Academy of Motion Picture (CAMP), organisers of CISFF, may take an initiative to start a short film lab to channelise the talents soon. We are working on the basics. A word of advice for young talent Young filmmakers must watch international short films and learn the art of making good and meaningful projects.
Just shooting without proper planning /screenplay/narration will never help them understand the visual media. Also, the International audience is keen to understand our culture through this visual media, which is missing in our short films.
