Koyambedu market struggles without waste disposal system
The conditions of hygiene at the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex, which draws several thousands of visitors every day, seem to be pathetic, thanks to the absence of an effective waste disposal system at the State’s biggest trading facility

Sources said that some portions of the 290-acre complex, under the control of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), was being used for open defecation. Since these areas are located a little far from the shops, anti-socials and drunkards use them to their advantage.
Monitoring the big marketing complex sprawling over 290 acres is a formidable task. The public are also using the place for urination and the area gives a space for anti-social activities especially drunkards during night time. Source say the marketing complex does not have enough waste bins and waste is littered on the premises.
“In such a big market, waste disposal should be done in a proper manner and the officials concerned should monitor this activity continuously. Further, the conservancy workers should intermittently be pressed into action and the traders should be educated to put all their waste in the bins,” says Nityanand Jayaraman, a citybased social activist. He also said the officials should construct compound walls around the complex, as that would prevent public throwing wastage. In fact, the traders complain that the biggest market complex is always stinking.
“I am at a loss that officials fail to take up maintenance work especially collecting and disposing wastage. Shockingly, we are seeing open urination on the premises,” said T Nagarajan, a trader in the marketing complex.
When Dt Next contacted, a senior official from Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex, Market Management Committee (MMC) personnel said , “We are regularly monitoring the premises. However, most of the traders are disposing waste in open places, though there are waste bins. However, we will take a look at this issue seriously,”.
