Over 10 dead, several hurt in bus-lorry smash near Madurai
In a major accident involving a State transport corporation-owned bus and a cement-laden lorry, more than 10 persons were killed on the spot and 20 others seriously injured near Tirumangalam in Madurai district around 3 pm on Saturday.

According to sources, a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus from Tirunelveli was on its way to Kumili in Theni district. When the was passing through T Kallupatti on Virudhunagar-Madurai road, a cement lorry bound for Tirunelveli coming in the opposite direction suddenly collided head on with the bus. The bus had overturned in the impact of the collision. In the impact, over 10 persons were killed on the spot and 20 others suffered grievous injuries.
Immediately, several locals rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. On information, police and ambulances reached the spot and moved the injured to hospitals nearby.
Police sources said the 108 ambulances had to travel minimum 20 km to reach the accident spot, which was a remote area on Madurai – Virudhunagar border.
This delay also affected the rescue of injured passengers. Sources said that the toll in one of the gory accidents in the district in recent past was likely to go up.
The police are investigating to find the exact reason for the accident.
