‘Tamil bhakti saints have inspired me’
Parvathy Baul, a baul singer, storyteller and musician, who has been popularising the traditional music of mystic minstrels from Bengal in India and abroad, will be performing in Banyan Tree’s Ruhaniyat, a concert, on Sunday at the Madras Race Club. She talks about the music that inspires her and the city, where she has performed as number of times.

Chennai
Tell us a little about your experience of performing in Chennai?
Chennai is a city of music, art and culture. It has been always fulfilling as an artiste to be appreciated by the music lovers here.
Do you like listening to regional music from Tamil Nadu? Who are your favourites?
Yes. A lot of Tamil musicians and artistes have been an inspiration to me. From old legends like DK Pattammal, who is a treat to listen to, to T Balasaraswati dancing and singing – it is absolutely mesmerising. I love the songs from Thevaram and the bhakti and mystic poetry of Tamil saints.
What has been the interest among the younger generation in baul music?
There is a lot more response from younger generation. They are willing to learn more about baul path and music. I have young students from different backgrounds who have taken the baul practice as a way of life.
