What is your act Suraj Mani & The Tattva Trip all about?

Well, it is an acoustic rock poetry act. The word ‘Tattva’ is the essence of things – a philosophy in Sanskrit. I write about life the way I see it and sometimes the way I would like to see it. I like seeing beauty in everything and feel there is no ‘correct’ way to look at things. I perform with my face half-painted as well. It is because there is a side of me that is defined and a side of me that will go anywhere I want to.

You are an engineer by profession. Share your musical journey.

When I was in my engineering college, I had realised that people enjoyed my singing. I was singing and writing songs throughout college. When I started working, I went to a floating restaurant with a friend in Cochin. There was a band playing without a vocalist so my friend introduced me to them as a singer. After the gig, they asked me to join the band. This was Motherjane. We had a decade long association and I wrote songs and sang for them. And now here I am with a completely new act, where I get to play the guitar, write poetry and perform.

How is it performing for the Chennai audience?

I just love the idea of being given an opportunity to stand in front of an audience, perform and inject some beauty and happiness into their life. I am looking forward to perform in an open space this time.
