A brutal clash between two sections of students of Dr Ambedkar Law College on November 12, 2008, over ‘Thevar Jayanthi’ celebrations had led to a case being registered against 41 students.

The two groups attacked each other with deadly weapons, including iron rods and clubs, near the main gate of the college in full view of the public.

Based on the statements of 45 witnesses, 73 exhibits and 15 material objects, the XVII Additional Sessions Judge M Gomathi Nayagam convicted 19 persons to three years of imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 15,000 each.

Similarly, on the basis of the complaint from one of the 19 persons, the judge convicted two others to three years of imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000 each.

It may be noted that immediately after the orders were pronounced, all 21 persons moved a memo before the Sessions Court to suspend their sentence as they would like to prefer an appeal at the Madras High Court.

Later, they moved an appeal following which Justice P Devadoss suspended the sentence.
