‘Not comfortable stepping out alone at night’

While most women agree that Chennai is much safer than staying in other metro cities, they have experienced stray incidents of being followed by men, being commented or being simply stared upon. They feel safe at night only when they step out in a group or carry a self-defense weapon

"I generally don’t step out without company, late at night. And even if I do, I ensure that I inform a friend or my family about my whereabouts. Thankfully I have never been stalked! But I have always been advised to carry a pepper spray since I travel a lot. So last time when I travelled to Varkala, I made sure I carried a pepper spray. I also carry my nail file as a safety tool in my bag always. I am taking mixed martial art classes and am trying to learn some self-defense techniques as well."

"I’ve never been stalked in public, but there are just as many predators on the Internet and social media as there are on the streets. Although I do carry a pepper spray with me, I’m not comfortable stepping out alone after 9 pm alone."

    Melanie Fernandez, Teacher

"Chennai is one of the safest places to live in India as compared to metros like Mumbai and Delhi. But my friends experienced something horrible, a few months ago near Valluvar Kottam. They were walking near a park and around eight boys followed them and passed comments. They asked for money and when refused, one of the boys hit my friend and ran away. Can you imagine!"
