Jayalalithaa thanks MLAs for passing bill on women’s quota
A day after the Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously passed a bill increasing the reservation for women in local bodies from 33 per cent to 50 per cent, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa thanked the legislators for unanimously passing it in the House

In a statement here, the bill, seeking to amend the Municipal and Panchayat laws to increase the percentage of reservation for women from 33 to 50 per cent, was moved by Municipal Administration Minister S P Velumani and it was passed unanimously.
In a release here, she said her government had initiated various measures for the uplift of women like 24 hours maternity care system, cradle baby scheme and special industrial estate for women entrepreneurs.
‘To ensure empowerment of women, the State government had considered it necessary to increase reservation to 50 per cent to promote women’s participation in urban and rural development’’, she said and added the Amendment Bill was tabled by the Minister in the House.
The Government has considered it necessary to increase the percentage of reservation for women from one-third of the total number of seats and offices to one-half, so as to promote empowerment and to facilitate participation of women in urban development. Jayalalithaa said ‘’I thank Legislators for unanimously passing the amendment bill’’.
