“More than 200 Indian films are shot abroad every year”
Harshad Bhagwat, Director of India International Film Tourism Conclave (IIFTC) that was held on Tuesday discusses the relevance of a platform to connect creative industries and tourism boards from across the globe

Chennai
How did you think of starting a film tourism event?
I was a business head with the production house Percept Entertainment and for a particular film I was asked to hunt for a proper location in Far East for a film. The whole process of contacting various tourism boards and getting due permits took more than two months. I realised then that the whole process needs to be streamlined Thus, we launched the India International Film Tourism Conclave in 2013.
How are films important for promoting tourism?
According to a study, each year more than 200 Indian film are shot abroad in over 50 countries. Films have been one of the most vital motivations for putting a destination on a travel itinerary. They provide many positive impacts for the destination in terms of economic and cultural value, brand awareness and positive image building.
Why did you choose Chennai as one of the three locations for hosting the conclave?
The Tamil film industry churns out a large number of films, even more than Bollywood. These days many of them are shot abroad. Hence, it makes sense to host the conclave in Chennai.
