    Teachers associations protest at DPI

    Various associations, including Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Association (JACTTA) and Tamil Nadu All Part-Time Instructors Association held protest on the DPI campus on Tuesday urging the government to consider their demands

    N.Venkatesan, state convenor of the Tamil Nadu All Part-Time Instructors Association said that over 15,000 teachers were recruited as part time instructors during 2012 to teach in various government schools for classes 6 to 8 for three half days in a week. 

    “We want the government to regularise us and provide regular jobs in government schools under SSA. We have represented our demands to state government officials during various occasions,” he said. A senior SSA official said that regularisation of the part time instructors involve policy decision by the state government. 

    Later, police detained about 500 part-time instructors who were protesting on the DPI campus. Meanwhile, in a separate protest, JACTTA members urged the state government to enact a separate education policy for Tamil Nadu to ensure common curriculum in schools, neighbourhood school system and Tamil as medium of instruction. 

    “As part of our five-point charter of demands we have urged the state government not to allow any new private schools in the state and should not close any government school,” JACTTA coordinator P.K. Ilamaran said. 

    A day of traffic congestion: 

    Tuesday certainly witnessed a lot of action on the demonstration front. Traffic snarls were witnessed in many parts of the city as various groups conducted protests. 

    Around 10.30 am, cadres belonging to the CPM, VCK and MDMK conducted a protest at the Collector’s office in support of the JNU protest in New Delhi. DK cadres conducted a protest near Rajarathinam Stadium demanding the government to announce more welfare measures for Dalits.
