Pondy fishermen to protest today over Vimal Kumar’s death
Fishermen from 18 villages would resort to massive agitations in Puducherry if the government failed to provide adequate compensation to the family of fisherman Vimal Kumar, who died while being chased by police recently. The fishermen also sought a government job to a member in Kumar’s family.

President of the action committee Selvanathan said that the committee is organising a series of agitations against the setting up of the coast guard station and hovercraft port in Veerampatinam village which would affect their livelihood.
Police chased the fishermen who allegedly damaged the fence and foundation stone laid at the site allotted to the Coast Guard where Vimal Kumar was trapped in slush and lost his life. The fishermen on February 26 met the District collector with a request to provide adequate compensation and a government job to the family of Kumar. However, no action was taken on the representation submitted by the fishermen so far, Selvanathan said.
He said the fishermen had decided to intensify their stir and as part of the next phase of agitation, the fishermen would hold a demonstration in front of the Thavalakuppam police station on Monday. If the government continued to show a ‘lethargic’ attitude towards them, the fishermen from all the 18 villages besides those from Villupuram and Cuddalore would be mobilised to organise a massive rally here.
