    Romanian held for bid to tamper with ATM

    A Romanian national, who is in Chennai on a tourist visa has been arrested by the Guindy police at an ATM near SPIC building on Monday night.

    The bank officials were alerted by a customer that a skimmer has been fixed on to the ATM card slot, allegedly to steal the card data of bank customers, informed the incident to the police. Bank authorities then checked the CCTV visuals and found that the Romanian along with another person had fixed a skimmer to the ATM machine. 

    A police team in plain clothes waited near the ATM and caught him when he came to check the status. Police have identified him as Johns Irimaionut (30), a native of Romania. 

    The police team took him to Adyar police station and is trying to extract the details from him. “We are having language problems in questioning the accused as he speaks bad English. We have done a background check on him and found out that he was staying in a hotel-cum-guest house at Uthandi. He is holding a travel visa but we are trying to verify this further,” a senior police official told DT Next

    The accused has been detained by police to conduct further interrogation.
