JNU student leader may campaign in Tamil Nadu

A day after the national leaders of both the Left parties claimed that the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) sensation Kanhaiya Kumar will campaign for the Left Front in the poll-bound states, People’s Welfare Front is optimistic that the potential star campaigner will also visit the state.

Kanhaiya Kumar, President of the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) will be visiting Ernakulam on March 12 to participate in the ‘Students Assembly Against Fascism’, an event to be organised by CPI’s student wing All India Students Federation (AISF).

“He is likely to visit the state after the programme in Kerala but we are yet to get confirmation,” a senior CPI(M) leader told DT Next. According to him, they are yet to get a confirmation from their party high command on scheduling the electioneering with Kanhaiya by their side.

He also pointed out that they were not particular this time about using his visit for campaigning for PWF as the electioneering was yet to gain momentum in the state.

G Ramakrishnan, CPI(M) state secretary of Tamil Nadu said that it was too early to comment now as elections were more than two months away. “We will decide later about that,” he said.

On the other hand, political analysts are of the opinion that if Kanhaiya visits the state for campaigning it would go down well with new and young voters.

According to political analyst Gnani Sankaran, using Kanhaiya for electioneering would be more effective in states where Sangh Parivar was dominant. “Right now, the mood in the capital does not have much relevance to Tamil Nadu,” he added.
