Lankan Coast Guard detains four fishermen
Continuing its aggressive posture, the Sri Lankan maritime forces detained four more Indian fishermen along with a fishing trawler on Wednesday midnight for allegedly straying into the island nation’s territorial waters and indulged in illegal fishing.

Fisheries Department officials quoting preliminary reports announced on Thursday that the arrested fishermen hailed from Kottaipattinam coastal hamlet in Pudukottai district. The fishermen were incarcerated by the Sri Lankan Coast Guard (SCG) while they were fishing mid-sea near the Kodiakkarai Coast in Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Navy on its official website said it had assisted the SCG to arrest four Indian fishermen along with a fishing trawler poaching in Lankan waters West of Karainagar Island.
The arrested fishermen along with the fishing trawler were handed over to officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Kankasanthurai for further action.
This is the third incident of arrest by Sri Lankan maritime forces during this month. With this, a total of 68 fishermen form Tamil Nadu were in Sri Lankan custody.
Leaders of various fishermen associations have urged the personal intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to secure the release of all the fishermen and their boats from Sri Lankan custody.
