Activists have alleged that the Corporation-run Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre on Lloyd’s Road has violated the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and they were denied entry into the facility on Thursday.

Barely a day after the SC directed the authorities to sterilise stray dogs, the Corporation-run ABC centre barred entry to two activists.

    S. Muralitharan, an activist with Indian Center for Animal Rights and Education (INCARE), said, “We also called the police but we were still denied entry. Four carcasses of dogs were found this morning at the centre and it looked like these animals died of starvation. This is a violation of the SC order and the ABC Dog Rules 2001. In a previous incident, earlier this year, 54 stray dogs that  were picked up from the Marina by officials were yet to be found. An inside source informed us that the death rate was around 30-40 dogs per day. We believe that these dogs were injected with a high dose of anesthesia, to put them to sleep permanently. The dogs, which have been sterilised, were not being given food or water, leading to death.”

A police complaint has been lodged. R.Kannan, Deputy Commissioner (Health), Corporation, said that they have not received any official complaint. “We have trained professionals at these centres and we can’t believe that such a violation has taken place,” he said.
