    Corporation under fire for reverting to tar roads

    The Madras High Court has rapped the Corporation for reverting to its plan of laying tar roads instead of concrete roads, which has a longer life span.

    The First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MM Sundresh, on observing that better technology is stated to extend the life of bitumen roads by up to 10 years though it cannot be disputed that the life of concrete road is much more, directed the presence of technological experts of Landtech Engineers Pvt Ltd as well as the Director of Highways Research Station, Guindy on April 23, to explain as to why there will be only blacktopping with duct provisions instead of the concrete road proposal. The Bench also directed the Corporation to obtain the opinion of IIT experts.

    The order was based on the compliance report filed by the Corporation Commissioner B Chandramohan after MHC had suo moto taken a newspaper report citing Corporation’s controversial decision to drop concrete road proposal as a public interest litigation.
