Dr S Manivasakan, director of the Centre of the Madras University said that the Indonesian Government had offered to provide two teachers to frame the curriculum and teach the course at the Centre.

“This initiative will not only help strengthen relationship between India and Indonesia but also facilitate several students to study a South East Asian language. Students who learn foreign languages like Bahasa have good job opportunities. They can join the Union government’s ministry of external affairs, get employed as interpreters, even work in Indonesia with their current job profile,” he said.

Dr Manivasakan also said that the Centre would look at starting more such language programmes from the South and South East Asian Countries.
