Chance for MK and DMK to set a record

Though a clear picture is yet to emerge on the alliance arithmetic in the State as parties are still continuing their talks to woo prospective partners, the upcoming election for the Tamil Nadu assembly is set to witness a record by the DMK or its leader M Karunanidhi as far as the State is concerned

If one looks at the political history of Tamil Nadu, it will clearly show that the AIADMK has formed government six times. If, the DMK wins in 2016 and forms a government, it will be the sixth time and will place the party on par with its arch rival AIADMK.

Similarly, if the DMK wins and the nonagenarian Dravidian patriarch Karunanidhi becomes the Chief Minister, it will be the sixth time (though not consecutively) he will be occupying the top post breaking the record of former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu and his Sikkim counterpart Pawan Chamling.

Late Jyoti Basu, who was continuously elected to the post five times from 1977 to 2000 and Chamling, who started his tenure in the top post from 1994 to 2014, the DMK veteran witnessed some breaks in his over seven decade-long political life. So, for the DMK the 2016 election is both an eye on power as well as record and for its leader M Karunanidhi. All eyes are on the mandate on May 19 to know if a new record will be set.
