Scoring a centum possible with good preparation
With final exams arriving upon students, experts share tips on battling the boards

Chennai
An element of luck is always helpful, but cracking a board exam calls for some sound strategy too. Class 10 students, aiming to score high marks in Tamil Matriculation Board exams, must avoid making grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
Clear handwriting will ensure that the content is legible, making it easier for the examiner to evaluate the paper correctly and for students to score more marks. A solid plan while preparing will make it easy for students to score centum. To tackle Tamil Paper I well, students must be thorough in their knowledge of both the prose and poetry portions.
Objective type questions from both sections constitute 10 marks. Students should read the entire lesson and pay special attention to the highlighted content. The 2-mark questions will require the student to concentrate on Chapters 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 in poetry and Chapters 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 for prose as the likelihood of questions appearing from these portions is higher.
When attempting the 4-mark questions, students are advised to include sub-headings as this will help highlight the key points they are making. Students can take liberties while attempting the essay-type questions. They can either focus on Chapters 1 to 5 or Chapters 6 and 7 as questions will generally be split between the two.
Again, it is very important that students use sub-headings. Students must learn poetry by heart and memorise the writer’s name. Tamil Paper II requires students to be completely conversant with the entire objective-type grammar questions found at the end of each lesson. The 2-mark questions need an example to be stated and elaborated upon.
When it comes to the 5-mark questions, it is quite certain that one will come from Chapter 9. For the multiple-choice questions, students must focus on Thirukural Alagiduthal . For translations and proverbs, students need not look beyond the pages of the textbook as questions are never conjured up from outside the syllabus.
Non-detail questions will be segregated into three groups. Questions will either appear from chapters 1, 4, 5, 9 or 2, 7, 8 or 3, 6, 10. Students can choose between any two groups. While attempting the general essay, students are advised to incorporate proverbs and quotes by famous personalities. Students can achieve full marks in letter writing if they follow the proper structure.
