Chennai
Were there challenges that you had to face because you were a woman entrepreneur?
Having worked abroad before moving to India, I could see the difference in the way working women were perceived, especially at senior levels where male egos come into play. It makes it difficult and I have had my share of challenges, but I believe I’ve managed them successfully. But yes, there are a lot of men who still have a problem being headed by a female boss.
How important is it to have more women in the workforce?
The perspective women bring, be it to the board room or the decision making processes, in terms of human interaction, emotional approach, empathy and sustainability, is quite different and very inclusive. Business will benefit immensely if more women are brought in the workforce. Beyond that, when we have working mothers, it creates better children and imparts a sense of equality and responsibility in them. It eventually contributes towards an equal and just society.
What advice would you give to women who want to start a business?
Kick out the fact that you’re a woman entrepreneur and deal with the world just like any other entrepreneur. If you believe you have an idea that solves a problem, go after it. At the same time, there’s a lot of merit we bring in as women, so you should take advantage of that and highlight the value you bring because of the diversity in perspective that’s different from your male counterparts.
