Highly placed sources in the railways said that the Railway Ministry has made a provision to constitute ‘Metro Railway Users’ Consultative Committee (MRUCC)’ with a view to provide frequent opportunities for consultation between railway administration and metro railway users.

The railways already has already in place the Railway Users’ Consultative Committee at the divisional level (DRUCC) and a similar committee (ZRUCC) at the zonal level at the headquarters of each railway zone. Apart from this, there is also a National Railway Users’ Consultative Council (NRUCC) at the ministry level.

“It is obvious that the metro rail users are different from normal rail users and so the exclusive committee is proposed to secure better representation of metro rail users in improving the efficiency and quality of services,” ministry level official said.

It may be noted that the main functions of the Railway Users’ Consultative Committee is to represent the users to the railway administration in provision of amenities, improvement of passenger services and proposal regarding opening of new stations.

It is reliably learnt that MRUCC will be established in all the cities where the metro rail transportation exists.

Welcoming the proposal, Dinesh Gomez, a regular commuter at Chennai Metro said that the committee will enable the users to come under a single forum and will aid better representation of the issues to the authorities. “Presently, metro users are approaching the authorities individually as there is no separate body to represent,” he said.

Confirming that the MRUCC is in the offing, a senior official with the Chennai Metro Rail Limited said that the committee is likely to be established when the first phase of the project is completed.
