The pilgrims used the head constable’s lathi to assault him, who along with a sub-inspector tried to intervene when the pilgrims fought with the hotel employees near Egmore Railway station.
The head constable Albert (45) suffered bleeding injuries on his head in the attack and was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College. Police have arrested Raju, Judu, Xavier and Thomas, all hailing from Warangal in Telangana.
According to police, the pilgrims who were about to leave for Velankanni by train from Egmore went to have food at a restaurant on the opposite side of the station. When they ordered biriyani, one of them allegedly found a strand of hair in the food and shouted at the restaurant employees. The employees also retaliated and when the situation was getting out of control, the hotel management called up the police control room and a patrolling vehicle was sent to the hotel.
Head constable Albert and sub-inspector Velumani went to the hotel and talked tough to the pilgrims.
Suddenly four of them got together and started assaulting the policemen. One of them grabbed the lathi from Albert’s hand and hit him on the head. Albert suffered a deep cut on his head.
Policemen soon informed the control room and more force came to the spot and arrested the pilgrims.
