Impostor TNEB engineer robs aged couple in Tambaram

According to the police, a welldressed youth came to the house of Ahoram (80), a retired private company employee at Parvathy Nagar and introduced himself as an assistant engineer of TNEB. Ahoram and his wife were alone living in the house. 

The conman told Ahoram that he came there to check the cables in the house as there had been several reports of short circuit from different parts of the city. 

Believing his words, Ahoram let him inside the house. The youth pretending like checking the cables inside the house, told Ahoram that all the wires are in a bad shape and need to be changed. 

He told the couple that it would cost Rs 15,000 to replace the old wires and if they pay the money, the cables would be changed by the same night. An unsuspecting Ahoram gave the amount sought by the youth. 

The conman further told them that he needed to check the electricity meter as well. “He has told them that he needed to keep some gold on top of the electricity meter to confirm the working condition of the meter. Again, Ahoram gave six gold bangles of his wife to the conman,” a police official said.

The youth then kept the bangles in a towel, folded it and kept it on the meter. After a few minutes, he bundled the towel and gave it back to Ahoram saying that the meter was fine. The fraudster then promised to send his personnel to replace the cables and left. 

Ahoram waited for a long and realised that he had been cheated as no one turned up to change the cables. Then, when he checked the towel he was shocked to find the bangles missing and instead there were only some stones.

Ahoram then lodged a complaint with the Peerkankarani police, who have launched a hunt to trace the cheat.
