Increase in students opting for Computer Science engineering

An administrator of a private engineering college here said that Mechanical engineering remained the most sought-after course this year too. However, Computer Science, which was in the third position last year has now climbed to the second spot, followed by Electronics and Communication engineering, Electrical & Electronics engineering and Civil engineering. 

“The renewed interest in Computer Science engineering might be because of large-scale placement by IT companies last year and we a expect positive trend in placement in the coming years too,” the administrator said. Students too feel that as IT companies pay a lucrative salary than core engineering companies, besides the latest developments in IT sector, it is a wise choice to opt for Computer Science. 

Commenting about the trend, former Anna University vice-chancellor Prof. A Kalanidhi said that Computer Science engineering had always been in demand among engineering students. “Today everything depends on applications of computer, from manufacturing, textile and more. This could have drawn more students,” he said adding that it might even be the first choice for students in the coming years. Prof. Kalanidhi urged students to pick their courses keeping in mind the conditions that might prevail four years later when they graduate.

It may be recalled that in 2015, of the 30,000-odd seats for computer science engineering in single window counselling, about 14,500 students joined the course.
