Private institutes point out flaws in NIRF ranking
Some private higher education institutions, including SASTRA University, have expressed their displeasure over the way higher education institutions have been ranked, including categorisation of institutions, in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2016

Thanjavur-based SASTRA University in a letter to Dr Surendra Prasad, Chairman of the National Board of Accreditation, on Tuesday pointed out several flaws in the ranking process. SASTRA University’s dean (Planning & Development) Dr. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam said that the NIRF office had advised SASTRA to apply under more than one category — University as well as engineering institution category.
“Just before the launch of the report, we received an e-mail that institutions, which submitted data in more than one category if ranked will create confusion and hence SASTRA will be considered only under the engineering category,” he said and added that he was shocked to find that there had been an exception in the case of many institutions which had been ranked in more than one category. The university has cited gross misrepresentation of data in the research productivity impact parameters. “It is shocking that there has been a gross deviation between the NIRF reported data from SCOPUS Publication and the actuals submitted by SASTRA from SCOPUS. As an institution, we have been supporting this initiative to objectively rank Indian institutions,” he added.
