The incident occurred at the Office of the Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise and Service Tax at Bibikulam locality, here on Friday night.

A CBI team, led by Inspector Murugan went to the Customs office to trap the Superintendent Ashok Raj, and a staff member Krishnan, based on a tip-off that some illegal transaction was taking place at the office.

The CBI sleuths caught red-handed Ashok Raj in a graft case and were recording his confession, when an armed gang barged into the office and started attacking the officials. The gang whisked away the Superintendent before destroying some incriminating documents.

Murugan and constable Balasundar were admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital with bleeding injuries. Investigations revealed that Ashok Raj is one of the Board of Directors of a prominent school in the city and allegedly has dealings with granite barons involved in multi-crore illegal granite mining scam in the region. On information, Inspector General of Police (South Zone) S Murugan and senior police officials visited the Customs office.
