Members of the Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts have moved the Madras High Court seeking it to direct the police to grant permission to hold an hunger strike at Zuzuwadi near Hosur -Bengaluru Highway against the proposed dams across Cauvery by Karnataka government.

The sangam, represented by its president PR Pandian, had contended that even as issues pertaining to illegal and unauthorised dams at Mekedatu and Rasimanal by Karnataka were pending before the Supreme Court, the state government there, through farmers associations, has performed boomi poojas and started preliminary works for both the dams on March 28.

In a bid to highlight this and draw the attention of the Centre and Tamil Nadu government, it was decided to conduct a peaceful demonstration through a token fast on April 12 and accordingly permission was sought from the police for the same on April 4.

However, officials informed the Sangam office-bearers over phone that the proposed agitation could not be allowed at Zuzuwadi, instead offered permission to conduct the dharna at a remote place near Krishnagiri.

Justice R Subbiah, who heard the case of the Vivasayigal Sangam posted it for further hearing to Tuesday.
