K Senthil, the president of Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association has said that the SC’s fresh order would put candidates from the state appearing for undergraduate medical courses in a disadvantageous position. Senthil further said that the candidates from the state, especially those who are studying State board syllabus, would require grace time to prepare for the NEET.

“If this order is implemented in another two or three years, students who would be appearing for the exams and their parents will have time to switch to CBSE schools in their class 11 or even in class 12, since the NEET follows the CBSE syllabus. If it is implemented from this year itself, several candidates from the state board syllabus may be forced to drop out,” he said.

A source from the Tamil Nadu-IMA pointed out that this would be a big setback for students, who get admission to medical courses through the all-India quota of 15 per cent as the new system may reduce the chances for Tamil Nadu students.

“A common entrance exam is only possible when there is a common syllabus. The NEET will bring down the chances further as they already lose out on the seats reserved for candidates who apply through the all-India quota from other states,” the source added.

Earlier in the day on Monday, the SC passed an order in favour of the NEET after hearing a review petition filed by Centre and the MCI seeking review of its previous order.
