According to CMRL officials, all metro services have been fitted with the equipment, ‘Event Recorder’ (EVR). Explaining the functions of the EVR, R Shruti Shambavi, Assistant Manager, CMRL said, “The new gadget will record all data during a train’s journey, which will help in exchanging communication at times of emergency. The EVR is like a flight data recorder (black box) in an aircraft.”
Each train would have one EVR connected to the train control and management system (TCMS) network, she said.
“Most importantly, the EVR will detect faults, if any, and pop it in the driver’s display unit (DDU). Further, the footage of CCTV surveillance cameras in the train are recorded by a separate system through Network Video Recorder (NVR),” the officer said and added that these features come in-built in all Metro services. The information is shared to sensitise people to the safety features that have been provided in the Metro trains, she added.
Another official explained that during the braking mode of the train, the induction motors would be double up as generators and supply power to the overhead line. Further, all the cars have Automatic Train Protection and Automatic Train Operation. The electricity operated bi-parting automatic sliding doors in all the coaches ensure safety.
