The Coimbatore district was one of the 13 districts of then Madras State formed in 1956. The sex ratio of Coimbatore is 1,000 and the literacy rate recorded in the district is 83.98 per cent as per 2011 Census, both numbers standing better than national and state’s ratios. Coimbatore is the third largest district in the state, after Erode and Kancheepuram in terms of area.
As for as SC population, Karamadai and Annur stand top with 26,320 and 25,865. In the 2011 Assembly election, Coimbatore South constituency witnessed 14 candidates as maximum and minimum (6) was recorded in Valparai (SC) constituency (6). Valparai is the only reserved constituency for SC among the district’s 10 constituencies.

Votes polled: 1,43,294
Polling percentage: 71.59%
Winner: Doraiswamy R (a) Challenger Dorai (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Pongalur Palanisamy N (DMK)
Margin: 27,796 votes
The erstwhile Coimbatore East constituency was reorganised and renamed as Coimbatore South Assembly Segment in 2008. The constituency will witness VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail) facility in EVMs during 2016 elections. K Ramani of CPM won here consecutively four times from 1977 to 1989. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), TMC (2001), TMC (1996), INC (1991) and CPM (1989, 1984, 1980 and 1977).

Total No of voters: 2,30,350
Votes polled: 1,58,903
Polling percentage: 69.09%
Winner: Chinnasamy R (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Mayura S Jayakumar (INC)
Margin: 34,326 votes
R Chinnasamy of AIADMK is a two-time MLA for consecutive times in 2006 and 2011. Praja Socialist Party legislators have won here twice in 1967 and 1971 elections. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), CPM (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and JNP (1984).
122. Kinathukadavu
Total No of voters: 2,14,627
Votes polled: 1,67,567
Polling percentage: 78.14%
Winner: Damodaran S (AIADMK)
Runner-up: M Kannappan (DMK)
Margin: 30,266 votes
KV Kandasamy and Damodharan of AIADMK consecutively won here three times each. AIADMK had won here seven times out of 11 elections. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984, 1980 and 1977).
123. Pollachi
Total No of voters: 1,77,052
Votes polled: 1,41,747
Polling percentage: 80.10%
Winner: Muthukaruppannasamy MK (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Nithyanandhan K (KNMK)
Margin: 30,308 votes
MV Rathinam, VP Chandrasekar and V Jayaraman of ADK were elected twice from the constituency. APS Goundar of DMK won from here twice and INC’s N Mahalingam thrice. An AIADMK fort with eight wins in nine elections. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991) and ADK (1989 and 1984).
124. Valparai (SC)
Total no of voters: 1,62,159
Votes polled: 1,24,440
Polling percentage: 76.76%
Winner: Arumugham M (CPI)
Runner-up: Kovaithangam (INC)
Margin: 3,421 votes
Kovai Thangam was elected in 2001 as TMC candidate and in 2006 as Congress candidate. The constituency elected different party candidates in each election, CPI, DMK, ADMK, TMC and INC. Winning parties: CPI (2011), INC (2006), TMC (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), ADK (1989), INC (1984) and CPI (1980).
