The art of quilling has existed for years but the world seems to have taken note only now with paper jewellery becoming the ‘in’ thing. Why do you think this has picked up late?

Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create designs and jewellery is one of the things that can be done with the art form. For a long time now, jewellery predominantly meant just gold or diamond. But with the advent of social media, people are increasingly becoming aware of other kinds of jewellery like terracotta and paper. The cost effectiveness, broad variety of colours and the possibility to get customised jewellery are drawing people.

How and when did you start your online jewellery store, Varnam?

I am an oral pathologist by profession and a selfmade artist by passion. I started Varnam in April 2013 to showcase my love for jewellery and specialise in making personalised handcrafted jewellery.

Tell us about your upcoming workshop.

We are conducting two workshops – Advanced quilling and paper jewellery. Anyone (above 14 years) with a passion in art and interest to learn can participate.
