Shallow Cooum foils 25-yr-old’s suicide bid

On Monday, people around Chintadripet Bridge witnessed some anxious moments, when a youth attempted suicide by jumping into the Cooum. Fortunately, the water level in the Cooum during the peak summer wasn’t deep enough for him to drown.

It was at around 1.45 pm, when the bare chested youth jumped into the Cooum in full public view. Passers-by rushed to the spot, informing the Chintadripet police station nearby.

Police passed on the message to the fire service who rushed to the rescue of the youth.

The unnamed youth (25), who had recovered from the initial shock of the fall, stood up in the river in waist-deep sludge.

He then waded through the river and hid under the bridge. The fire service personnel, then dropped a ladder into the river and urged the youth to climb up but he refused.

A fire service staff then got down the ladder and helped the youth climb up. Chintadripet inspector K Sivamani also went down the ladder to pull out the young man. However, the fire service staff managed to pull him out before the Inspector could venture into the water.

Police sources said the youth was mentally disturbed and could not recollect his name or address.

“We asked him for details but he didn’t know anything. We think he is mentally challenged. We brought him food but he refused to eat. We have sent him to Government Medical College for further examination,” Inspector Sivamani told DT Next.
