In a statement, he said the DMK-led front had won 98 seats in the May 16 elections securing 39.7 per cent votes (1,71,75,374 votes) as against 40.8 per cent garnered by the AIADMK (1,76,17,060 votes). The difference in vote margin in the elections between the DMK and the AIADMK was just 4,41,686 votes , which works out to 1.1 per cent.
Though the margin was very narrow, the AIADMK would be the ruling party again and the DMK with an unprecedented number of 89 members, would be the major opposition party in the State Assembly, he said and thanked all those electorate who had voted for the DMK-led front.
Karunanidhi thanked the people of Tiruvarur for re-electing him with the highest margin of 68,366 votes.
