Sources said Anand, a salesman from a textile showroom found a girl baby abandoned in front of the GH at around 4 am. Soon he alerted the police. The AHTU police rushed to the spot and rescued the child and kept at the GH police station. Later, the police passed on the information to the Childline and the volunteers from the child line took the child under their custody. Around afternoon, the child was handed over to the Child Welfare Committee and their referral to the government
home.
However, by the time, a woman named Sangeetha, a resident of Coimbatore came to Child line stating that it was her child. She also narrated that she came to Tiruchy at her mother’s (girl baby’s grandmother) house two days back for a family function. She (grandmother) is said to be mentally unsound and so she had taken the baby on Thursday night without the knowledge of Sangeetha.
Since Sangeetha could not find the baby on Friday morning, she went in search of the baby and GH police informed her that the baby was taken by the Childline. However, the baby was handed over to the Child Welfare Committee and they will return the baby after verifying the identity of the mother, said Childline officials.
