Bring out the Picasso in you!
Designer Divya Ramachandran, who runs the design consultancy ‘Ynot’ which deals with socially oriented projects for the rural sector, speaks about her upcoming workshop, Picasso for a Day, in the city at Ashvita Nirvana, Besant Nagar on June 11.

Chennai
What is the idea behind the workshop?
The workshop is basically for people who want to create art which simulates something inside them. It is an emulation workshop, which means that the participants would learn the painting styles and methods of Picasso, and then create their own artwork inspired by them. I chose Picasso because I thought his work is a little simpler to study. So, even beginners who are interested can join and attempt to create their own Picasso piece.
How do you think famous artists of the past, like Picasso, are relevant to the art of today?
Honestly, having lived in Bangalore and Chennai, I find that people in Chennai are a little hesitant when it comes to creating something on their own, and do not have the confidence they need in their own work. I have had people here tell me that they couldn’t possibly paint something good by themselves. So that is where the past artists like Picasso come in. I feel that if a person starts to learn art by studying and emulating others’ techniques, then that might later give him the confidence when he attempts a piece of his own.
Please tell us about other projects of yours
This is my first emulation workshop, but in Bangalore I have done many other arts and crafts projects and classes. I was part of a project called “The Happy Wall Project”, wherein a team of artists went to different cafes and gyms in Bangalore, and painted them. The aim behind this was to liven up the city a bit, and it was a really good experience working with so many different kinds of people. As a part of the project, I also helped paint two schools in Chennai.
