In the last two days alone 165 cases have been booked against underage drivers and 158 cases booked against owners of these vehicles. Police have collected an amount of Rs 1,38,600 towards fine from these cases.

When police catch hold of a motorist under the age of 18, he is immediately slapped with a fine of Rs 500 under Section 181 of Motor Vehicles Act. In addition to this, the owner of the vehicle driven by the underage driver, is fined Rs 500 under Section 180 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

This is the first time Chennai city traffic police have started penalising the owner of the vehicle when an underage rider is caught. Several other cities in the country have already implemented this rule.
