Arts & science seats increased after demand
The Madras University Syndicate, which met on Monday has decided to allow government arts and science colleges to increase their seats in the under-graduate stream by 20 per cent this academic year.

Madras University Registrar Dr P David Jawahar said that this year there had been a good response for arts and science courses. Therefore, the University Syndicate has decided to allow private college to increase the UG seats by 10 per cent, government aided colleges an additional 15 per cent over existing seats and government arts and science institutions by 20 per cent.
The University will send a circular in this regard to all its 140 affiliated colleges in the districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur within three days, the registrar said. Dr M Selvaraj, Principal, Guru Nanak College, and Madras University Syndicate member said that the college received over 8,000 applications for the 700 seats in the government aided stream (day college).
“We have more demand for courses like B Com, BCA, B Sc (computer science), B.Sc (Maths), B Sc (Physics) and BSc (Chemistry),” he said. Welcoming the move, Dr M Venkataramanan, Principal, DG Vaishnav College, Chennai said the additional seats would benefit a lot of needy students, as more students have applied for courses including BCom and BSc (computer science) this year.
