The institute has moved 13 spots up from last year’s 56 among 350 universities in Asia. For the first time in Asia ranking, IIT-Kanpur and Madras have debuted in top 50 ranks this year. In fact, 18 of the 21 universities that featured in the 2015 list have moved up in rankings.
According to Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, remained India’s best university moving up one spot to reach the 33rd rank. “Its success is partly due to its highly-impactful research it achieved the perfect weighted score for papers per faculty. IIT Bombay comes next at 35, climbing 11 ranks from 46 last year.
It has gone past IIT Delhi, despite IIT Delhi’s six-place rise to 36. The two Indian universities which have made their debut in the rankings this year, are Amrita University and Andhra University. The Anna University, which was in the 301+ band in 2015 has now come within the 251-300 band. The University of Delhi and the University of Calcutta have also performed well for the former to rise to 66th rank (25 ranks) and the latter went up 41 places to reach 108th spot.
Dr Karthick Sridhar, Vice Chairman, Indian Centre for Academic Rankings & Excellence (ICARE) says that taking a que from President Pranab Mukherjee’s own admission of ‘parroting’, Indian institutions are finally engaging with ranking agencies more than ever before and this had started bearing fruit. “For the time first in the history all of India’s Top 10 Universities have displayed a positive growth,” he said.
