The petition was filed by K Ganapathy, father of deceased Rajendra Prasad. He had claimed that his son suffered from fits on June 2 and though he was rushed to Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) he was not admitted in the emergency ward.
Pandi, a contract worker, had demanded Rs.300 for a stretcher and, when he refused, the admission slip for the in-patients ward was not given by Pandi. Treatment was not provided to his son until the police intervened. But Rajendra Prasad died soon. It was prayed that compensation should be given to the family and action should be taken against Pandi.
But Public Prosecutor claimed that Pandi and two more persons were arrested and action was taken. As the advocates boycotted the court proceedings on Friday, Ganapathy’s counsel was not available for argument and hence the Division Bench adjourned the case to June 28. The bench also directed the PP to enquire about the exact steps taken by police in the case.
Notice to government on PIL to curb crime
The Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) has issued notice to the state government seeking reply to the petition seeking action to maintain law and order and to control the crime rate. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by social activist, K .K Ramesh. It was claimed that the law and order situation in the state had degraded and the crime rate had increased in the past. Incidents of chain snatching and murders had increased in the recent past and the police force had become ineffective. Hence it was prayed that the strength of the police force should be increased, the number of outposts should be increased and crime divisions should be set up at rural police stations to control the crime rate.
