According to sources, TK Rajendran, Commissioner of Police, has directed all the colleges to carry out a thorough inspection of students before allowing them into the campus. Bags and other belongings must be completely checked at the entrance of the institution. College authorities should make sure that no student is allowed to step inside the campus without the identity card.

Another major reason cited for this frisking of students is the alarming rise in drug abuse on campuses in the city.

The commissioner who chaired a joint meeting of college principals, MTC authorities and students’ representatives at his office here, also said that all institutions must install CCTV cameras at the entrance and corridors, students’ hostel and canteen.

Further, he also advised not to allow former students inside their premises, unless they are on an official work. Warning that stringent action would be taken against students who indulge in anti-social activities, Rajendran also wanted similar serious measure by the colleges against unruly students. Dismiss a student from the college if he or she failed to correct themselves, was the stern message of the Commissioner.

Public can dial 95000 99100 to lodge their complaint against unruly students. Police have also asked the MTC authorities to explore the possibilities of having on-board cameras on their vehicles. College authorities promised to extend full co-operation to the police.
