Elders prefer bus passes to tokens

Metropolitan Transport Corporation officials are helpless even as senior citizens demand bus passes instead of bus tokens which enable them to undertake only 10 trips a month.

The bus token scheme was started towards the end of the last AIADMK regime when it was introduced under Section 10 of the Legislative Assembly Rules. The scheme entails those above 58 years to receive 10 tokens per month after submission of a one-page application form at the MTC depots along with proof of age and residence.

When the scheme started before the assembly elections, beneficiaries were given colour coded tokens for four months to help them avoid coming to the depot every month. The scheme was continued even after the model code of conduct came into force. MTC officials said “around two lakh beneficiaries utilise the scheme, though they usually demand bus passes which would be of more help to them.”

Asked whether the same system is being followed, senior officials said, “We now give them tokens for three months together and only ten tokens can be used every month as the validity is clearly mentioned in the tokens.”

“With two tokens used to go and return from the MTC depot to get the tokens, the remaining tokens get used up within a few days,” says P Krishnan, a retired private sector employee in Tiruvanmiyur.

“Yes” agrees T George of Vyasarpadi, who wonders why bus passes cannot be issued as they will really benefit the elderly people. “In a city where autos are expensive, free passes will really be useful,” he adds. Meanwhile, T Arul Jose, state vice president, TN Retired Government Employees Association, asked: “When will the state government extend the scheme to the districts to benefit those living there?”

“It’s a policy decision which has to be taken by the state government,” officials explained.
